比重计是根据阿基米德定律和物体浮在液面上平衡的条件制成的,是测定液体密度的一种仪器。它是一根密闭的玻璃管,一端粗细均匀,内壁贴有刻度纸,刻度不均匀,上疏下密,另一头稍膨大呈泡状,泡里装有小铅粒或水银,使玻璃管能在被检测的液体中竖直的浸入到足够的深度,并能稳定地浮在液体中,也就是当它受到任何摇动时,能自动地恢复成垂直的静止位置。当比重计浮在液体中时,其本身的重力跟它排开的液体的重力相等。于是在不同的液体中浸入不同的深度,所受到的压力不同,比重计就是利用这一关系刻度的。
